I popped a valium to help sleep my way through the flight from Bangkok - and so it was that I found myself coughed-up, blinking and shell-shocked, in the harsh Western light of Sydney two weeks ago today. It was nice to have a friendly face waiting to meet me at the airport. And Graham whisked me straight out to Sydney's Midnight Shift nightclub to ease the shock of my arrival.
Since then, my time in Sydney has been a bit of a whirlwind of job interviews, and preparations for them - so it didn't really feel like holiday anymore. It was all worth it though! I've landed a job as deputy editor of a glossy, Australia-based, popular science mag, with probable visa sponsorship to stay on here beyond a year!!
So with just a few weeks to go before my start date I decided to see a bit more of Australia. I'm in Brisbane at the moment for three days, then I fly down to Melbourne tomorrow for a week to stay with Adam. More details from Brisbane soon.
Sydney's a pretty city, the beach life is awesome and it's already clear to me that the standard of life here is HIGH compared to London. So who knows, maybe I'll stick around for a bit. (Not to mention the fruit bats! Sydney's botanic garden is home to tens of thousands of flying foxes, that take flight across the city at dusk every night. I'm not sure that Beth would agree... but, how cool is that!) -- J
